Call for Papers
The Department of English, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb,
invites papers for the International Conference on the Occasion of the 90 Anniversary of English Studies
and the 40th Anniversary of Scandinavian Studies in Zagreb

90 Years of the Department of English
8-9 November 2024
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb
Zagreb, Croatia

Looking back at our 90-year history, the Department of English (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb) has always been a meeting point of minds, forming (more or less stable) networks, and co-creating (as well as contesting) narratives. Our strength lies in the diversity of scholarly areas and traditions covered, ranging from English to Scandinavian languages and cultures seen through the prism of literary and cultural studies, linguistics, translation studies, language acquisition and teaching. Therefore, on the occasion of its 90th anniversary, the Department of English invites papers which focus on the role of minds, networks and/or narratives in and across our disciplines, theorized from any point of view. We encourage submission of abstracts encompassing but not limited to the following areas of interest:

– English Literary Histories
– Critical Theory
– American Studies
– Postcolonial Cultures
– Film and Media Studies
– Theoretical Linguistics
– Applied Linguistics
– Second Language Acquisition and Teaching
– Varieties of the English Language
– Translation Studies
– Scandinavian Studies

Keynote speakers
Mario Brdar (Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Croatia)
Orvar Löfgren (Lund University, Sweden)
Cécile Roudeau (Université Paris Cité, France)

Abstracts for 20-minute presentations (+10 minute discussion) should be submitted via email by 15 April 2024 at the following address: Abstracts should be based on work that has not yet been published. We especially encourage submissions from young researchers. Abstracts should be written in any variety of English and should not exceed 500 words, including references. Each individual may be involved in a maximum of two abstracts (as author or co-author). Abstracts will be evaluated anonymously by two reviewers, so please avoid any self-identification in the body of the abstract.
